Apparent Gadwall (Anas strepera) x American Wigeon (Anas americana) hybrid - Suffolk, VA - February 1, 2004

Taken by Les Willis with a Nikon Coolpix 4300 Digital Camera through a Zeiss Diascope 85mm w/ 20-60x zoom eyepiece.

I observed this adult male which was swimming with a female Gadwall.  This bird was pretty much "all" Gadwall as far as plumage and structure except for a bright green eye-patch typical of male American Wigeon.  This bird was observed from my back yard on the Nansemond River in Suffolk, VA.  This was in the afternoon and these images were captured looking west into the bright sun.  Hence, these pictures are not the best.

Contrast/Brightness adjusted to show green eye-patch.
