Great Cormorant - January 2, 2005
Town Point on the Nansemond River - Suffolk, VA

I found this for the Nansemond Christmas Bird Count perched with hundreds of DC Cormorants on the power transmission towers that cross the Nansemond River.  4th record from my backyard).

Taken by Les Willis with a Nikon Coolpix 4300 Digital Camera through a Zeiss Diascope 85mm w/ 20-60x zoom eyepiece.  Click on thumbnail for larger image.  These are not the best pics - very distant and backlit.

This was not taken on the same date but just posted here to show how far away the towers are and the numbers of birds involved.  This tower was only "half" loaded.  A "fully" loaded tower holds about 500 to 650 birds.

Nansemond River in Suffolk, VA

This was another goody perhaps brought in by a northeast storm.
