Unidentified Winter Hummingbird - Suffolk, VA - January 17, 2003

Taken by Karen Powder and scanned by Les Willis with a HP Scanjet 5400c at 2400dpi.

This hummingbird was present for at least one week in January of 2003 at the Powder residence on North Harbor Rd
Suffolk, VA 23435.  Click Here for map.  Please note the ice on the feeder and snow on the ground.

Karen told me that it had a "red dot" on its throat.  In fact, she was afraid that it was a drop of blood originally!  So it appears this is an imm. male bird - probably of the genus Selasphorus or Archilochus.

Contrast/Brightness adjusted to show plumage patterns.

(Note - white fleck on wing is a scan defect.)
